Proctor District

The Proctor District has been described as an “urban village”.  With a vibrant business district, two public schools, (Washington Elementary and Mason Middle School), a Farmers’ Market, (that is the 2nd largest in the City of Tacoma), a public library, (Anna Lemon Wheelock), three banks and the Metropolitan Market, gourmand’s paradise, and Proctor Safeway,  the description seems more than deserved. This is a friendly, walk able area, with locally owned businesses and restaurants.

Check out this video about Washington Elementary! My granddaughter and her great grandfather attended school in the original Washington Elementary.  The new Washington Elementary opened in September of 2013.

The famous Blue Mouse, that was built in 1923 and is the oldest continuously operating movie theater in Washington State, is at the heart of the Proctor District. The current blue mice adorning the theater were a gift from Tacoma born glass artist, Dale Chihuly!

If you want to have a bite to eat, you have a choice of some terrific ethnic restaurants, including the East West Cafe, Pomodoro, Soul, La Fondita and Europa.  Looking for a piece of pie or meatloaf,  Knapps can serve them up in style.  And yes, there are not one but two Starbucks for coffee, and try Peaks and Pints for a great craft beer
